Jenrose and the Kentucky Bootleggers: Music

Luster Goes to Jackson

(Jenrose and the Kentucky Bootleggers)
I think of this as the kind of song Johnny Cash would have written if he were a 30-something Midwestern drag king…

For more on the adventures of Luster, see the documentary Drag Kings on Tour, directed by Sonia Slutsky.
[DRAG KING TRILOGY 3:]

The last time I saw Luster
we were out in Columbus at the bar
I said It's been since that long week in April
won’t you tell me how you are?
He said Girl, you know we’ve lost so much
but we’ve come so far
He said Come next Sunday
these boys and me we’re headin on the road
Can’t say just what we’ll discover there
cuz I don’t know
But I’m sure I’m gonna have me a tale or two for you
when I get home
(and it’s) oooohhhh well it’s time to go …

So they headed out on the highway
started in a New York state of mind
Received by royalty in Philly
but the cops were not that kind
Said Well we're gonna let you go this time
but you boys better find your way to the county line
Then down to Tennessee
where Luster said he was afraid to go
Said Before I take this road with you, boys,
I got to know
We gotta make a pact cuz it’s just a fact
I gotta know that you got my back
when it’s time to go…cuz ooooooh
when it’s time to go - well it’s time to go…

So they headed down to Jackson
down to the place they call the 'sissy bar'
Boss said Better keep those cameras off boys
or you’ll not get far
Just stick with us
don’t make no fuss
gotta mind just who and what
and where you are
Then just outside of Jackson
to the kingdom where the queen she runs the town
Right there in the big house
sittin in the middle of a sacred ground
in a sea of brown
Says Boys you know we gotta keep this down
Cuz there’s just a lot of ‘simple folk’ around
So don’t hang around
You just lie low til it’s time to go…

Well by the time they reached Ohio
Luster said they knew the end was near
Said After all we've seen and done, boys
this much is clear:
We are all outsiders here
and things are not as they appear
And when you head out on the highway
you learn something everywhere you go
Can't say just what we discovered here
cuz I don't know
But I'm sure as hell gonna have some tales to tell
when I get home
(and) oooooooooh well it's time to go…
